The Humblebums

...were essentially a duo. The original duo was Billy Connolly and guitarist Tam Harvey; they were soon joined by Gerry Rafferty, but then Harvey left – leaving Connolly and Rafferty as a duo.

After Connolly left to pursue a solo comedy career (in the early days of which he performed a number of Humblebums songs), Gerry Rafferty performed as a solo artiste for a few years, then formed Stealers Wheel with his former school friend Joe Egan. He performed on the band's first album (and the hit single Stuck in the Middle with You), but left before it was released. Baker Street, the song for which he is best remembered, was the first UK single release from City to City, his first solo album after leaving Stealers Wheel.

Billy Connolly and Gerry Rafferty remained close friends until the latter's death in 2011, aged 63, of multiple organ failure brought on by alcoholism.
